Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2 to 1 on Sunday, and kylian mbappé was the man who made it happen. Two goals, one of them his 100th goal for the club. It was the kind of night you remember, even if you had to stay up late to see it.
The win also shakes up the title race. Let’s go through it in a simple way.
What happened in el clasico today’s big talking point
If you’ve been searching el clasico today or elclasico, the short version is easy. Madrid won, Mbappé scored twice, and the la liga table suddenly looks tighter.
His first goal was a bit of luck. Barcelona defender Gerard Martín tried to clear the ball, but it smacked straight into mbappe. He didn’t need a second invitation. He slipped it past goalkeeper Joan García, and Madrid led.
Barcelona hit back after the break. Raphinha equalised, and for a while a draw felt likely.
Then the 87th minute arrived. Eduardo Camavinga laid the ball back in the box, and Mbappé tucked it into an empty net. That was goal number 100 for the club, and it was also the winner. Not a bad way to get there.

Mbappé joins an elite Madrid club
A hundred goals for real madrid fc is no small thing. Mbappé is only the 24th player to get there, and the fourth fastest. Cristiano Ronaldo still leads the list with 450 goals in 438 games, which is a ridiculous record.
Mbappé is 27. He arrived at Madrid on a free transfer in June 2024. Before that, he scored 256 goals in 308 games for Paris Saint-Germain and 27 in 60 for AS Monaco.
This summer he also became France’s top scorer of all time, and the top scorer in World Cup history. You can read more about that competition on the FIFA website.
The trophy question
Now for the awkward part. Mbappé has topped the scoring charts in la liga in both of his full seasons at real madrid cf, yet he still has no trophy to show for it.
Barcelona won the league in 2024 to 2025, and again in 2025 to 2026. So this win meant more than three points. It told everyone Madrid are still in this.
What Mbappé said after the game
Mbappé didn’t make it about himself. He said the team was the real star. He was honest too, admitting Madrid had some hard moments, along with spells where they were on top.
His view was simple. It’s a great result, but it’s only three points, and the work goes on. He said he loves scoring, but the win mattered more than any personal milestone. And he thinks the quality in this squad is clear, as long as everyone works as one group.
Mourinho and the Madrid mood
Coverage after the game also focused on jose mourinho. Reports said he had Madrid ready for a big statement win. Other reports said he wasn’t fully happy, because he wants the league title and not just one good night.
That mood makes sense. A strong madrid match is nice. The trophy is what counts.
A big week for the Ballon d’Or
The timing is neat. The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony is the day after this game, and Mbappé is in the race for it.
Barcelona’s yamal is part of that conversation too. A big barca vs real madrid night will only keep the debate alive. South African fans love a good argument about who deserves it, so expect plenty of noise.
How to follow the title race from South Africa
This race will keep moving, so it helps to have a simple routine. Check la liga results after each round to see how the table shifts. Look at laliga fixtures a few days ahead so you don’t miss a big kickoff. And keep an eye on real madrid today and barca news, because injuries and returns among real madrid players can change a lot.

Looking ahead
People will keep typing barca vs madrid, real madrid vs barca, real madrid vs barcelona today and rma vs barca into search bars. No surprise there. This is one of the biggest rivalries in football.
This chapter had everything. A milestone goal, a late winner, Barcelona’s first league loss of the season, and a table that’s now much closer. Madrid will want to build on it, and Barcelona will want to answer quickly.
The next few rounds will tell us plenty. If Mbappé keeps scoring and Madrid stay sharp, that trophy drought might finally end. But it’s a long season, and nothing is settled yet.
